STISD implemented a District of Innovation Plan on Aug. 3, 2017, by a unanimous vote of the STISD board of directors. This is the beginning of the third year of the five-year plan approved at that time. The district brings a report to the board each year to share how each of the approved innovations are working.

The plan is working well for the district in all four areas in which activities are taking place, including the following:

  • First Day of Instruction for Students: STISD has utilized this innovation for earlier school start dates during the 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and the 2019-2020 school year. The response from the district community has been positive.
  • Minimum Attendance for Class Credit for Final Grade: STISD has utilized this innovation to assist individual students in taking online coursework, resulting in recovery of course credits and also for enrichment courses.
  • Teacher and Principal Appraisal System: The 2017-2018 school year was utilized to research and develop a locally-developed teacher and principal appraisal system. The STISD board approved the new system on July 24, 2018, and it was implemented during the 2018-2019 school year. The first-year implementation went very well, with positive responses from administrators and teachers. The 2019-2020 school year will be the second year of implementation.
  • Teacher Certification: STISD has utilized this innovation for local teacher certification during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years, and will continue in the 2019-2020 school year. In 2017-2018, one Career and Technology Education teacher was locally certified. In 2018-2019, three Career and Technology Education teachers were locally certified. In 2019-2020, five Career and Technology Education teachers are locally certified. These individuals bring current career experience into the classroom.
