During the Aug. 27 meeting, the STISD board of directors hired Criselda Rodriguez Flores as the new principal of South Texas ISD Rising Scholars Academy (Rising Scholars).

Rodriguez Flores refers to herself as a "learner by heart and a teacher by heart." In her 19 years of service in education, she has served in various positions, including math teacher, counselor, dean of instruction, assistant principal, and principal. Rodriguez Flores joined STISD during the 2018-2019 school year as an assistant principal at South Texas Business, Education & Technology Academy (now South Texas ISD World Scholars). Prior to being hired as principal of Rising Scholars, she served as interim principal.

Rodriguez Flores graduated from Edinburg High School and attended the University of Texas Pan-American for her post-secondary studies. She is currently pursuing her doctorate degree at Texas A&M University, College Station.

Excited to take on this role, she shares, "I am thankful and humbled for the opportunity to serve you. I am very proud and honored to be your South Texas ISD Rising Scholars Academy principal. My passion is to empower learners to fulfill their life purpose and mission by creating an inclusive learning environment full of opportunities. I know that together we can create a culture of trust and respect that will allow us to continue with a learning environment that is positive, safe, dedicated, and committed to academic excellence for everyone.  RSA’s commitment is to strive to achieve excellence in all that we do in order to reach the maximum personal and academic potential of all of our students."

Rodriguez Flores has worked with her Rising Scholars team to develop goals for the year, which include continuing to reach excellence in academics, attendance and community engagement. She looks forward to working alongside parents and others within the district community to ensure success in these areas for the benefit of students.
